Dhaumya’s Counsel on Incognito Conduct in a Royal Household (राजवसतौ आचरण-निति)
विदिते चापि वक्तव्यं सुहृद्धिरनुरागत: । एष धर्मश्ष कामश्न अर्थशक्षैव सनातन:,विदित होनेपर भी हितैषी सुहृदोंका कर्तव्य है कि वे स्नेहवश हितकी बात बतावें। यही सनातन धर्म है और इसीसे काम एवं अर्थकी प्राप्ति होती है
vidite cāpi vaktavyaṃ suhṛdbhir anurāgataḥ | eṣa dharmaś ca kāmaś ca arthaś caiva sanātanaḥ ||
بات معلوم بھی ہو تب بھی، محبت سے وابستہ خیرخواہ دوستوں کو فائدہ مند بات کہنا چاہیے۔ یہی سناتن دھرم ہے؛ اور اسی کے ذریعے کام اور اَرتھ دونوں کی تکمیل ہوتی ہے۔
धौग्य उवाच
A true well-wisher does not stay silent merely because the listener already knows; out of affectionate concern, a friend should still voice what is beneficial. Such timely, welfare-oriented speech is presented as sanātana-dharma and as the means by which kāma and artha are properly secured.
In the Virāṭa-parvan context, Dhaumya is giving counsel that frames friendly advice as a duty: the role of a suhṛd is to speak for another’s good, grounding practical guidance in dharma and linking it to the broader aims of life (artha and kāma).
