Sainyasaṅgraha and Bhāga-Vyavasthā (Forces Assembled and Rival Allocations) |

yato nārocayad ayaṁ vigrahaṁ tair mahātmabhiḥ |

Educational Q&A

Even in political conflict, the moral stature and rightful strength of opponents matters: initiating war against the righteous is ethically troubling, and wise elders like Bhīṣma weigh dharma and consequences rather than mere ambition.

Duryodhana comments on Bhīṣma’s lack of enthusiasm for starting a war with the Pāṇḍavas, attributing it to Bhīṣma’s clear awareness of their power, righteousness, and fame—especially the strength of the Pāṇḍava leader along with his sons.
