Chapter 49: Sañjaya’s Enumeration of the Pāṇḍava Coalition (पाण्डवसैन्यसमागम-वर्णनम्)
yaḥ kṛṣṇasadṛśo vīrye yudhiṣṭhirasamo dame | tenābhimanyunā saṅkhye pāṇḍavā abhyayujjata ||
The verse presents an ethical ideal of kṣatriya excellence: true martial strength (vīrya) should be paired with inner discipline (dama). Abhimanyu is praised not only for battlefield prowess likened to Kṛṣṇa’s, but also for self-control comparable to Yudhiṣṭhira’s—suggesting that power gains legitimacy when governed by restraint.
Sañjaya reports that the Pāṇḍavas moved forward to engage in combat, led or accompanied by Abhimanyu. His qualities are highlighted to underscore the confidence and moral stature of the Pāṇḍava side as they enter the confrontation.
