Stability in the wise—and in a wise community—rests on three supports: discernment with patience (buddhi and kṣānti), restraint of the senses (indriya-nigraha), and renunciation of wealth (dhana-saṃtyāga). Without these, wisdom and social harmony do not endure.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma after the war, Nārada delivers a didactic statement emphasizing the inner disciplines that sustain the learned and their assemblies, presenting ethical self-mastery and non-attachment as the foundation of lasting order.
