Educational Q&A

Creation is explained through a Sāṅkhya framework: Nature (prakṛti) and its evolutes (vikāras) function through causes and mutual interaction, while consciousness (puruṣa) presides—indicating an ordered, law-governed cosmos where effects arise from causes under the presence of awareness.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction, Bhīṣma is teaching Yudhiṣṭhira philosophical foundations for peace and right understanding. Here he describes how the constituents of nature and their transformations interact under the oversight of Puruṣa, accounting for the ongoing expansion and process of creation.
