Chapter 23: Śakuni Reports, Kaurava Advance, and Arjuna’s Penetration of the Host
te cānyonyam avaikṣanta tasmin vīrasamāgame
The verse highlights the warrior ethos: before conflict, opponents assess one another with composure and clarity. Ethically, it frames battle as a solemn arena where courage and duty (kṣatriya-dharma) are tested, not merely a burst of anger.
Sanjaya describes a moment in the war where the assembled heroes face each other and exchange looks—an implicit appraisal of readiness and intent within the larger confrontation of the Kurukṣetra battle.
