Arjuna’s evacuation of Dvārakā, Vasudeva’s rites, and the caravan’s crisis
kṛtvā bhārāvataraṇaṃ pṛthivyāḥ pṛthulocanaḥ
The verse frames the great historical upheaval as serving a dharmic-cosmic function: when oppression and adharma become a ‘burden’ upon the Earth, divine agency operates to restore balance. Ethical emphasis falls on the idea that power and violence are not ends in themselves; they are judged by whether they re-establish order and reduce harm.
Vyāsa, as narrator, signals that the central mission—relieving the Earth’s burden—has been completed. In the Mausala Parva context, this points toward the winding down of the Yādava era and the transition into dissolution and departure, rather than further expansion or rule.
