mānuṣatvam anuprāpto naine śocitum arhasi | śobhane ye mahātejasvī vasavaḥ te vasiṣṭhajī-śāpa-doṣeṇa manuṣya-yoniṃ prāptāḥ | ataḥ eteṣāṃ kṛte śoko na kartavyaḥ |

Educational Q&A

Grief should be tempered by understanding causality (karma and śāpa): when suffering or an unwanted condition arises from a prior fault and its consequence, lamentation is portrayed as inappropriate; one should respond with discernment and acceptance aligned with dharma.

Vaiśampāyana consoles a woman addressed as “Śobhane,” explaining that the radiant Vasus have taken human birth because of Vasiṣṭha’s curse; since their human incarnation is a consequence of that curse, she is advised not to mourn for them.
