Śiva-stavarāja: Upamanyu’s Preface and Initiation of the Śarva-Nāma Enumeration
Anuśāsana-parva 17
mahārūpo mahākāyo vṛṣarūpo mahāyaśāḥ | mahātmā sarvabhūtātmā viśvarūpo mahāhanuḥ ||
The verse presents an ethical-theological vision in which true greatness is aligned with Dharma and universality: the praised figure is not merely powerful, but identified with righteousness (vṛṣa) and with the inner Self of all beings (sarvabhūtātmā), suggesting that moral authority and cosmic compassion are inseparable.
Vāyu-deva is describing and extolling a supremely exalted being through a chain of epithets—immense form, embodiment of Dharma, great fame, universal Self, cosmic form—framing the subject as both ethically ideal (Dharma) and metaphysically all-pervading (viśvarūpa).
