Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition

जानकिरननम विख्यात: सो5भवन्मनुजाधिप: । दीर्घजिद्वस्तु कौरव्य य उक्तो दानवर्षभ:

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

janakir ananam vikhyātaḥ so'bhavan manujādhipaḥ |

dīrghajid vastu kauravya ya ukto dānavarṣabhaḥ ||

ayaḥśirā aśvaśirā vīryavān ayaḥśaṅku gaganamūrdhā ca vegavān—rājan—ime pañca parākramī mahādaityāḥ kekayadeśasya pradhāna-pradhāna-mahātmā-rājā-rūpeṇa utpannāḥ |

وہ ‘جانکی’ کے نام سے مشہور ہو کر انسانوں میں بادشاہ بنا۔ اور اے کوروَو، ‘دیرغ جِہوا’ کے نام سے جس دانوَ-شریشٹھ کا ذکر ہے، وہی اس زمین پر ‘کاشی راج’ کے نام سے معروف ہوا۔ اسی طرح بہت سے دانوَ اور اسور زمین پر نامور فرمانرواؤں کی صورت میں پیدا ہوئے—انسانی نام اختیار کر کے بھی اپنی سخت سرشت اور ہیبت ناک توانائی ساتھ لیے۔ اس عبارت کا اخلاقی زور یہ ہے کہ آنے والا تصادم محض سیاست نہیں؛ آسُری میلان بادشاہت میں اتر کر اَدھرم اور جنگ کی بنیاد رکھتا ہے، اور یہ تنبیہ بھی دیتا ہے کہ طاقت اور تخت خود بخود فضیلت کی ضمانت نہیں۔
