Mahabharata 1.140.73Adi Parva, Adhyaya 140, Shloka 73

Hiḍimba’s Approach and Hiḍimbā’s Warning to Bhīmasena

na saṁśayam anāruhya naro bhadrāṇi paśyati | saṁśayaṁ punar āruhya yadi jīvati paśyati ||

(Kaṇika)

Educational Q&A

True welfare is often recognized only after one has faced uncertainty and danger; surviving hardship clarifies what is beneficial and how to value it.

Kaṇika is offering counsel in the Adi Parva, using a maxim-like statement to argue that people learn and perceive their good only when pressed by crisis and risk.
