agner apāṃ ca saṃyogād atyantopahatasya ca rasānāmiha sarveṣāṃ śuddhirutplavanaṃ smṛtam
Suta Goswami (narrating the Purana’s ritual instructions to the sages of Naimisharanya)
It establishes a core Shaiva ritual principle: offerings to the Linga must be made fit (śuddha), and even defiled materials can be rendered acceptable through prescribed purification using Agni (fire) and Jala (water).
By emphasizing purification, it reflects Shiva as Pati—the Lord who receives offerings only when the pashu (embodied soul) disciplines itself through śauca; the rite mirrors inner cleansing of pasha (impurities) so the offering becomes sattvic and aligned to Shiva-tattva.
Utplavana—ritual cleansing of substances via the combined action of fire and water—parallels Pashupata discipline where external purification supports internal purification (removal of mala/impurity and steadiness in worship).
