General Description of the Course of Hell / Naraka-gati
सुतीक्ष्णं चरितास्ते हि कर्कशासु शिलासु च । आस्फाल्य शतशः पापाः पच्यंते तृणवत्ततः
sutīkṣṇaṃ caritāste hi karkaśāsu śilāsu ca | āsphālya śataśaḥ pāpāḥ pacyaṃte tṛṇavattataḥ
Sa katunayan, sa pamamagitan ng paglakad sa napakatulis at magaspang na mga bato, at sa pamamagitan ng paulit-ulit na paghampas (sa katawan), daan-daang kasalanan ang 'niluluto'—sinusunog—tulad ng tuyong damo. Mula sa penitensiyang iyon, ang mga karumihan ay mabilis na nauubos.

It teaches that intense tapas (austerity) can rapidly exhaust pāpa (sin) and mala (impurity), weakening pāśa (bondage) so the soul (paśu) becomes fit for Shiva’s grace (pati-anugraha), a key Shaiva Siddhanta emphasis.
Such bodily discipline is presented as a preparatory purification; when paired with Saguna Shiva worship—Linga-pūjā, mantra-japa, and devotion—the mind becomes steady and receptive, making worship fruitful rather than merely external.
The verse points to tapas as purification; in practical Shiva Purana practice this is best harmonized with Panchakshara japa (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) dhāraṇa, and Rudrākṣa—gentler disciplines that burn impurities without self-harm.
