Cosmogony and the Roles of the Trimūrti
अतोहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि यथा सर्गस्तु ब्रह्मणः । समुत्पन्नं तु मे ब्रूहि यथा व्यासाच्च ते श्रुतम्
atohaṃ śrotumicchāmi yathā sargastu brahmaṇaḥ | samutpannaṃ tu me brūhi yathā vyāsācca te śrutam
Kaya nga nais kong marinig kung paano naganap ang paglikha ni Brahmā. Ipagbigay-alam mo sa akin nang malinaw kung paano ito sumibol, ayon sa iyong narinig mula kay Vyāsa.
A disciple-listener (the inquirer addressing the narrator who learned from Vyasa)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadyojāta
Role: creative
Cosmic Event: sarga (cosmogonic emanation)
It shows the right approach to Shaiva scripture: humble inquiry into creation while implying that all cosmology must be heard through authentic lineage (Vyāsa), ultimately pointing beyond sarga toward the supreme Lord (Pati) who transcends it.
The verse initiates a discourse on origins; in Shaiva Siddhanta, creation is not independent but unfolds under the Lord’s governance. Thus, understanding sarga supports Saguna Shiva worship (Linga as the accessible form of the transcendent) while remembering Shiva’s supremacy beyond Brahmā’s creative role.
The practice implied is śravaṇa (devotional listening) from a valid teacher-paramparā. As a takeaway, combine attentive listening with japa of the Panchakshara ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya") to stabilize the mind while studying creation teachings.
