Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya, within the Umāsaṃhitā’s discourse on sacred tīrthas and purification)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
Jyotirlinga: Tryambakeśvara
Sthala Purana: Godāvarī is intimately tied to Tryambakeśvara (origin of Godāvarī near Trimbak); this verse’s Godāvarī mention naturally situates the tīrtha network around that Jyotirliṅga, though the verse itself is a general tīrtha-praise.
Significance: Snāna and tīrtha-sevā at Godāvarī is held to remove pāpa and pāpa-janita-bhaya; pilgrimage to Tryambakeśvara integrates liṅga-darśana with river purification.
Role: liberating
The verse praises certain sacred rivers as immediate removers of pāpa (spiritual impurity) and the anxiety it produces, pointing to tīrtha as a Shaiva means of purification that supports devotion, right conduct, and movement toward Shiva’s grace.
In Shaiva practice, tīrtha-bathing and pilgrimage commonly accompany Linga-darśana and pūjā; the verse frames these rivers as purifying supports for approaching Saguna Shiva in the Linga with a cleansed mind and strengthened faith.
Perform tīrtha-snāna (ritual bathing) with remembrance of Shiva—ideally japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—as a practical takeaway for reducing pāpa and cultivating inner fearlessness.
