It teaches that a title or reputation has meaning only when the underlying reality is present—just as “jewel-bearing Earth” is true only because Earth actually supports jewels. In Shaiva thought, names and worldly attributes are secondary; the real support (ādhāra) is to be sought in Shiva as the ultimate ground of being.
The Linga points to Shiva as the true substratum behind all forms and labels. Saguna worship uses names and forms as supports for devotion, but this verse reminds the devotee not to stop at mere designation—one should seek the reality signified by the symbol: Shiva, the abiding support of the universe.
Contemplate the ‘support’ behind changing names and appearances while japa-ing the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), fixing the mind on Shiva as the steady ādhāra; this pairs well with Linga-dhyāna and offering bhasma/tripundra as a reminder of truth beyond outer labels.
