Devata

Indra

This short Indra hymn praises the wonder-working, Soma-delighting warrior who surpasses all born beings by will, strength, and effective deeds. The poets (Gautamas) press toward him with speech like cows to their calf, asking him to awaken to their chant and grant unbounded generosity, protection, and victory in the gaining of power.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Him we hymn for you—Indra, the wonder-worker, the conqueror of hostile movements, rejoicing in the Soma-essence. As cows to their calf at the flowing places, so with our words we press toward Indra.

Mantra 2

We seek him, the shining one of good giving, wrapped in powers like a mountain rich in many enjoyments; the forceful plenitude, hundred-fold and thousand-fold, swiftly bringing the luminous riches (rays/cows).

Mantra 3

O Indra, strong in irresistible might, no towering powers and no hard forces can bar you. Whatever inner wealth you will to give to the praising seeker who is open to increase, none can diminish that gift of yours.

Mantra 4

You are the warrior by will and by force, and by your power of effective works you surpass all that is born. This chant turns toward you for protection—the inspired utterance the Gautamas have brought forth.

Mantra 5

For by your might you have leapt forth beyond the farthest limits of heaven. No earthly realm can encompass you, O Indra; you bear and uphold your own law of being according to your inherent power.

Mantra 6

None can set a boundary to your giving, O Maghavan, when you honor the offerer. Become awake to our hymn; be the impeller of our utterance, most bountiful, for the winning of plenitude of force.
