Agni

This hymn to Agni praises him as the youthful, wise “lord of the house” who grants the sacrificer expansive vitality, protection, and right guidance. Agni is invoked as a powerful, victorious force—like a winning steed—and as a Mitra-like regulator who drives away hostility and disorder. The sukta culminates in the inner act of kindling: the mortal enkindles Agni with mind and awakened thought, aligning with luminous order.

Mantra 1

त्वमग्ने बृहद्वयो दधासि देव दाशुषे । कविर्गृहपतिर्युवा ॥

You, O Agni, place in the giver a vast vitality of being; O god, you are the seer and the young lord of the inner house.

Mantra 2

स न ईळानया सह देवाँ अग्ने दुवस्युवा । चिकिद्विभानवा वह ॥

With the aspiration of praise, bring to us the gods together, O Agni, for our service; O discerning, widely shining one, carry them here.

Mantra 3

त्वया ह स्विद्युजा वयं चोदिष्ठेन यविष्ठ्य । अभि ष्मो वाजसातये ॥

With you indeed as our yoked companion, O youngest, by your most impelling force we press forward toward the winning of vāja—the plenitude of power.

Mantra 4

और्वभृगुवच्छुचिमप्नवानवदा हुवे । अग्निं समुद्रवाससम् ॥

I call the pure Agni, like Aurva and like the Bhṛgus, like one who wins attainment—Agni who dwells in the ocean-depths (in the vast underlying being).

Mantra 5

हुवे वातस्वनं कविं पर्जन्यक्रन्द्यं सहः । अग्निं समुद्रवाससम् ॥

I call Agni, the seer whose sound is like the wind, whose cry is like thunder-rain, a force—Agni who dwells in the ocean-depths.

Mantra 6

आ सवं सवितुर्यथा भगस्येव भुजिं हुवे । अग्निं समुद्रवाससम् ॥

As one calls the impulsion of Savitar, as one calls the enjoyment of Bhaga, so I call Agni who dwells in the ocean-depths—Agni as the awakener of right movement and the distributor of delight.

Mantra 7

अग्निं वो वृधन्तमध्वराणां पुरूतमम् । अच्छा नप्त्रे सहस्वते ॥

I call you to Agni, the ever-growing Power within the sacrificial journey, the most abundant in his workings—come straight to the mighty Offspring, the forceful bearer of energy.

Mantra 8

अयं यथा न आभुवत्त्वष्टा रूपेव तक्ष्या । अस्य क्रत्वा यशस्वतः ॥

May this Power become for us as Tvaṣṭṛ—shaping like a craftsman forms a figure—by his effective will and luminous skill, the bearer of true glory.

Mantra 9

अयं विश्वा अभि श्रियोऽग्निर्देवेषु पत्यते । आ वाजैरुप नो गमत् ॥

This Agni moves among the gods as lord over all splendours; may he come to us with vāja—plenitudes of force and victorious increase.

Mantra 10

विश्वेषामिह स्तुहि होतॄणां यशस्तमम् । अग्निं यज्ञेषु पूर्व्यम् ॥

Here praise Agni, the most glorious of all the invoking priests, the ancient power present in the sacrifices—first in the journey of the offering.

Mantra 11

शीरं पावकशोचिषं ज्येष्ठो यो दमेष्वा । दीदाय दीर्घश्रुत्तमः ॥

Swift and bright with purifying flame, eldest of powers, he shines in the dwelling-places—Agni, most widely heard, the long-resounding call within us.

Mantra 12

तमर्वन्तं न सानसिं गृणीहि विप्र शुष्मिणम् । मित्रं न यातयज्जनम् ॥

Sing him, O seer—like a winning steed, full of force—like Mitra who sets men in the right path, he drives away what is hostile and disordering.

Mantra 13

उप त्वा जामयो गिरो देदिशतीर्हविष्कृतः । वायोरनीके अस्थिरन् ॥

Toward you have the kin-powers set their shining words, preparing the offering; they have established them in the very front of Vāyu—so the Breath-force may carry the work forward.

Mantra 14

यस्य त्रिधात्ववृतं बर्हिस्तस्थावसंदिनम् । आपश्चिन्नि दधा पदम् ॥

He whose triple-founded seat—the spread sacred ground—stands unbroken; even the Waters set down their step there: in that established base the movement of consciousness finds its footing.

Mantra 15

पदं देवस्य मीळ्हुषोऽनाधृष्टाभिरूतिभिः । भद्रा सूर्य इवोपदृक् ॥

The step of the bountiful God is secured by invincible helps; it is a happy vision, like the Sun—an upward seeing that brings right perception.

Mantra 16

अग्ने घृतस्य धीतिभिस्तेपानो देव शोचिषा । आ देवान्वक्षि यक्षि च ॥

O Agni, kindled by the thoughts fed with the clarified light, blazing with your flame, bring the gods here—and offer to them; make the inner exchange complete.

Mantra 17

तं त्वाजनन्त मातरः कविं देवासो अङ्गिरः । हव्यवाहममर्त्यम् ॥

The Mothers brought you forth—O Angiras, a seer among the gods—immortal bearer of the offering: the inner Fire that carries our will upward into the divine.

Mantra 18

प्रचेतसं त्वा कवेऽग्ने दूतं वरेण्यम् । हव्यवाहं नि षेदिरे ॥

O Agni, seer, they have seated you within as the luminous-minded messenger, most choice to be chosen—bearer of the offering who links our human speech and will to the gods.

Mantra 19

नहि मे अस्त्यघ्न्या न स्वधितिर्वनन्वति । अथैतादृग्भरामि ते ॥

For I have not the unharmable Cow, nor the wood-cleaving axe that can win it; therefore I bring to you only this much—my offering of aspiration as I am able.

Mantra 20

यदग्ने कानि कानि चिदा ते दारूणि दध्मसि । ता जुषस्व यविष्ठ्य ॥

Whatever bits of fuel we place into you, O Agni—however small—accept them, O youngest and ever-renewed: take our imperfect materials and make them fit for the flame of growth.

Mantra 21

यदत्त्युपजिह्विका यद्वम्रो अतिसर्पति । सर्वं तदस्तु ते घृतम् ॥

Whatever the little licking-creature eats away, whatever the ant creeps over—let all that become for you ghee: may every loss and impurity be turned into clarified richness for the flame.

Mantra 22

अग्निमिन्धानो मनसा धियं सचेत मर्त्यः । अग्निमीधे विवस्वभिः ॥

Kindling Agni with the mind, the mortal awakens the thought-power; with radiant energies he kindles and seeks Agni—the flame of conscious will that leads toward the luminous order.
