Adhyaya 85 — The Gods’ Hymn to the Goddess and the Emergence of Kaushiki; Shumbha Sends His Envoy
नैरृत्यै भूभृतां लक्ष्म्यै शर्वाण्यै ते नमो नमः ।
दुर्गायै दुर्गपारायै सारायै सर्वकारिण्यै ।
ख्यात्यै तथैव कृष्णायै धूम्रायै सततं नमः ॥
nairṛtyai bhūbhṛtāṃ lakṣmyai śarvāṇyai te namo namaḥ / durgāyai durgapārāyai sārāyai sarvakāriṇyai / khyātyai tathaiva kṛṣṇāyai dhūmrāyai satataṃ namaḥ
Pagpupugay nang paulit-ulit sa Iyo bilang Nairṛtī; sa Lakṣmī ng mga bundok; kay Śarvāṇī. Pagpupugay kay Durgā, sa Nagpapatawid lampas sa mga kahirapan, sa Diwa, sa Gumagawa ng lahat. Walang patid na pagpupugay kay Khyāti, at gayundin kay Kṛṣṇā at kay Dhūmrā.
The many names teach that the same Śakti governs all domains—fortune, fearsome protection, fame, and transformation. Devotion integrates life’s opposites under a single sacred principle.
Stotra (praise) within a narrative episode; serves dharma by prescribing remembrance of names and attributes for protection and success.
‘Durgapārā’ is the inner passage beyond the ‘fortress’ of ego and fear. Dark/smoky epithets (Kṛṣṇā, Dhūmrā) point to Devi’s presence even in obscurity and liminal states, not only in radiant forms.
