Uttara–Arjuna Saṃvāda
वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--परंतप! धृतराष्ट्रपुत्र दुर्योधनके ऐसा कहनेपर भीष्म, द्रोण, कृप और अभश्वत्थामाने उसके इस पराक्रमकी बड़ी प्रशंसा की ।। इति श्रीमहाभारते विराटपर्वणि गोहरणपर्वणि उत्तरगोग्रहे अर्जुनप्रशंसायामेकोनचत्वारिंशो 5 ध्याय:,इस प्रकार श्रीमहाभारत विराटपर्वके अन्तर्गत गोहदरणपर्वमें उत्तर दिशाकी ओरसे गौओके अपहरण के प्रसंगमें अ्जुनकी प्रशंसाविषयक उनतालीसवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ
vaiśampāyana uvāca—parantapa! dhṛtarāṣṭraputra duryodhanenaivaṃ ukte’pi bhīṣma-droṇa-kṛpāśvatthāmabhiḥ tasya parākramasya mahān praśaṃsā kṛtā. iti śrīmahābhārate virāṭaparvaṇi goharaṇaparvaṇi uttaragograhe’rjunapraśaṃsāyām ekonacatvāriṃśo’dhyāyaḥ.
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: “O tagasunog ng mga kaaway! Kahit na sinabi iyon ng anak ni Dhṛtarāṣṭra na si Duryodhana, lubos pa ring pinuri nina Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, at Aśvatthāmā ang kanyang ipinamalas na kagitingan.” Sa gayon nagwakas ang ika-tatlumpu’t siyam na kabanata sa Virāṭa Parva ng Mahābhārata, sa bahaging Goharaṇa, hinggil sa pag-agaw ng mga baka mula sa hilagang panig at sa pagpupuri kay Arjuna.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The passage highlights how public praise by revered elders can legitimize or amplify martial ambition: valor (parākrama) is socially rewarded, yet the surrounding context (a cattle-raid) reminds readers that prowess and dharma are not identical—ethical evaluation must consider motive and justice, not only strength.
In the aftermath of Duryodhana’s remarks, senior Kuru warriors—Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, and Aśvatthāmā—offer strong commendation of the displayed heroism. The chapter colophon situates this within the Virāṭa Parva’s cattle-seizure episode from the northern side, connected with the theme of praising Arjuna’s decisive martial excellence.
