Agastya’s request for wealth and the decision to seek resources from Ilvala

The verse sets up a moral contrast: demonic power and deceit can threaten social and religious order, while dharma ultimately requires vigilance, discernment, and protection of the righteous—especially sages and guests—against harmful deception.
Lomaśa begins recounting an old episode to Yudhiṣṭhira, introducing two Daitya brothers, Ilvala and the younger Vātāpi, who lived in the city of Maṇimatī—an opening that leads into their notorious actions in the subsequent verses.
