tato 'bravīt tathā dṛṣṭvā bhartāraṁ śokakarśitam | śvaśruś ca śvaśurabhartṝṇāṁ mama puṇyāstu śarvarī ||
Wika ni Mārkaṇḍeya: Nang makita ni Savitrī ang kanyang asawa na lupaypay sa dalamhati, siya—matatag sa dharma—ay nagpahid ng mga luhang umaagos sa kanyang mga mata at nagsalita: “Kung ako’y nagsagawa ng anumang pag-aayuno at pagninilay, kung ako’y nagbigay ng kawanggawa, at kung ako’y naghandog ng mga alay sa sakripisyo, nawa’y maging mapalad at nagdudulot ng kabutihang-kalooban ang gabing ito para sa aking biyenan na babae, aking biyenan na lalaki, at aking asawa.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
Personal spiritual merit (from tapas, charity, and ritual) is not portrayed as self-serving; it is ethically directed toward the welfare of one’s family and dependents. Savitri embodies dharma by converting her own virtue into a prayer for others’ good.
In Markandeya’s narration, Savitri sees her husband overwhelmed by sorrow. She composes herself, wipes her tears, and invokes the merit of her past austerities, gifts, and sacrifices so that the present night may become auspicious for her husband and her parents-in-law.
