Sūrya-stava: Dhaumya’s Counsel and the Aṣṭaśata-nāma of Sūrya
गाड़ेयं वार्युपस्पृश्य प्राणायामेन तस्थिवान् । शुचि: प्रयतवाग भूत्वा स्तोत्रमारब्धवांस्तत:,गंगाजलका आचमन करके पवित्र हो वाणीको वशमें रखकर तथा प्राणायामपूर्वक स्थित रहकर उन्होंने पूर्वोक्त अष्टोत्तरशतनामात्मक स्तोत्रका जप किया
gāṅgeyaṃ vāry upaspṛśya prāṇāyāmena tasthivān | śuciḥ prayatavāg bhūtvā stotram ārabdhavāṃs tataḥ ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Matapos sumimsim ng tubig ng Gaṅgā at sa gayon ay luminis, tumayo siyang payapa sa disiplina ng pagpigil ng hininga. Pinigil ang pananalita at nilinis ang isip, saka niya sinimulan ang pagbigkas ng himno—larawang etikal ng panlabas at panloob na paglilinis bago ang banal na pagbigkas at debosyon.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Sacred speech and devotion are to be preceded by inner and outer discipline: purification (ācamana), breath-control (prāṇāyāma), and restraint of speech (prayatavāk). The verse models dharmic preparation before recitation.
The person being described performs ritual sipping of Gaṅgā water, steadies himself with prāṇāyāma, restrains his speech, and then begins a hymn of praise (identified in the surrounding context as an aṣṭottara-śata-nāma type stotra).
