Ajñātavāsa-saṅkalpaḥ — Yudhiṣṭhira’s Resolve and Dhaumya’s Exempla on Concealment
सत्यवानुवाच व्यायामेन ममानेन जाता शिरसि वेदना,सत्यवानने कहा--सावित्री! आज लकड़ी काटनेके परिश्रमसे मेरे सिरमें दर्द होने लगा है, सारे अंगोंमें पीड़ा हो रही है और हृदय दग्ध-सा होता जान पड़ता है। मितभाषिणी प्रिये! मैं अपने-आपको अस्वस्थ-सा देख रहा हूँ। ऐसा जान पड़ता है, कोई शूलोंसे मेरे सिरको छेद रहा है। कल्याणि! अब मैं सोना चाहता हूँ। मुझमें खड़े रहनेकी शक्ति नहीं रह गयी है
satyavān uvāca | vyāyāmena mamānena jātā śirasi vedanā | sarvāṅgeṣu ca pīḍā me hṛdayaṃ dagdhaṃ iva manye | mitabhāṣiṇi priye aham ātmānam asvasthaṃ iva paśyāmi | śūlaiḥ iva kaścid mama śiraś chindann iva pratibhāti | kalyāṇi idānīṃ suptum icchāmi | na me tiṣṭhituṃ śaktir avaśiṣṭā ||
Wika ni Satyavān: “Dahil sa pagod sa pagpuputol ng kahoy ngayong araw, sumakit ang aking ulo. Masakit ang buong katawan ko, at ang puso ko’y tila nasusunog. O minamahal na banayad magsalita, nakikita kong ako’y may karamdaman. Para bang may tumutusok sa aking ulo ng matutulis na tulos. O mapalad na babae, nais ko nang matulog; wala na akong lakas upang tumayo.”

The verse foregrounds steadfast care and dharmic partnership: when suffering and mortality approach, the ethical ideal is compassionate presence and unwavering commitment—qualities that define Sāvitrī’s forthcoming response.
During the forest episode narrated by Mārkaṇḍeya, Satyavān, after strenuous woodcutting, suddenly feels severe pain and weakness and tells Sāvitrī he must lie down, signaling the onset of the destined crisis.
