Draupadī’s Lament and the Question of Kṣatriya Forbearance
śreyo yad atra dharmajña brūhi me tad asaṁśayam | kariṣyāmi hi tat sarvaṁ yathāvad anuśāsanam ||
The verse emphasizes seeking śreyas—the truly beneficial and ethically superior course—by consulting a dharma-knower, and then committing to follow that guidance precisely and without hesitation.
In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a speaker appeals to a recognized authority on dharma, requesting a clear, doubt-free recommendation about the best course of action and pledging faithful compliance with the instruction given.
