Duryodhana’s Fast: Śakuni’s Consolation and the Summoning of a Kṛtyā
The verse highlights the ethical necessity of proper authorization and lawful means: even a desired journey should be undertaken through an appropriate upāya (legitimate method) and with the ruler’s consent, reflecting respect for social order and dharma.
Vaiśampāyana expresses a practical difficulty: he cannot see a workable plan to reach the intended forest, and he also doubts that the king will permit his departure—signaling an obstacle that must be resolved before the journey can proceed.
