Indradyumna Upākhyāna: On Kīrti, Smṛti, and Restoration

Educational Q&A

The verse warns that when dharma declines, the first visible symptom is the breakdown of forbearance and duty within the household: parents and children stop forgiving each other, and spouses abandon mutual obligations. Ethical life is shown to depend on kṣamā (forgiveness) and gṛhastha-dharma (household responsibilities).

Mārkaṇḍeya is describing signs of an age of degeneration (yuga-kṣaya): social and familial relationships become harsh, respect between father and son collapses, and wives no longer maintain traditional service and care toward husbands—illustrating a broader erosion of social order.
