Cyavana’s Tapas, Sukanyā’s Curiosity, and Śaryāti’s Appeasement (च्यवन-सुकन्या-उपाख्यान आरम्भ)
अग्नीनामतिथीनां च शुश्रूषुरनसूयिका । समाराधयत क्षिप्रं च्यवनं सा शुभानना,सुमुखी सुकन्या किसीके गुणोंमें दोष नहीं देखती थी। वह त्रिविध अग्नियों और अतिथियोंकी सेवामें तत्पर हो शीघ्र ही महर्षि च्यवनकी आराधनामें लग गयी
agnīnām atithīnām ca śuśrūṣur anasūyikā | samārādhayat kṣipraṁ cyavanaṁ sā śubhānanā, sumukhī sukanyā ||
Sinabi ni Lomaśa: Si Sukanyā, maganda ang mukha at maamo, hindi mapanlait at hindi naghahanap ng kapintasan. Masigasig siyang naglingkod sa mga sagradong apoy ng tahanan at sa paggalang sa mga panauhin; kaya’t mabilis niyang napalugod ang pantas na si Cyavana.
लोगमश उवाच
The verse upholds dharma through two linked duties: reverent care of the sacred fires (Agni) and honoring guests (atithi-satkara). It also praises anasūyā—freedom from envy and fault-finding—as the inner disposition that makes service pure and effective, leading to the sage’s satisfaction.
Lomaśa describes Sukanyā’s conduct after her association with the sage Cyavana: she diligently serves the household’s ritual fires and guests and promptly undertakes devoted attendance upon Cyavana, thereby winning his favor.
