Vaiśampāyana uvāca | pāṇḍavāḥ samabodhyanta bālyāt prabhṛti keśava | antaṃ dhīrā niṣevante madhyaṃ grāmyasukhapriyāḥ | uttamāṃś ca parikleśān bhogāṃś cātīva mānuṣān |

Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: “O Keśava, mula pa sa kanilang pagkabata ay ginising na ang mga Pāṇḍava sa malalim na ugong ng śaṅkha at ng mga tambol na dundubhi, sa matamis na tunog ng mṛdaṅga, at sa himig na kaaya-aya ng plauta.” Pagkaraan ay inilahad niya ang isang pangkalahatang aral: ang matitibay ang loob ay naghahangad ng “huling kalagayan” ng karanasan—ang kalayaang lampas sa karaniwang ligaya at dalamhati—samantalang ang mga nakakapit sa magagaspang na kalayawang makamundo ay nananatiling nakakulong sa “gitnang antas” ng panandaliang pagkalugod. Ang tunay na matatag, tinatanggap maging ang pinakamabibigat na hirap bilang bahagi ng dharma, tinitiis iyon nang maluwag sa kalooban, at sa wakas ay nakakamit ang kaganapang higit pa sa ligayang pantao.
