Reconciling Contingency and Human Effort
विगाढे युधि सम्बाधे वेत्स्यसे मां जनार्दन । जनार्दन! यदि कदाचित् आप मुझे या मेरे पराक्रमको न जानते हों तो जब भयंकर संहारकारी घमासान युद्ध प्रारम्भ होगा, उस समय उगते हुए सूर्यकी प्रभाके समान आप मुझे अवश्य जान लेंगे ।। १३ ह ।। परुषैराक्षिपसि किं व्रणं पूतिमिवोन्नयन्,पके हुए घावको चाकूसे चीरने या उकसानेवाले पुरुषके समान आप मुझे अपने कठोर वचनोंद्वारा तिरस्कृत क्यों कर रहे हैं?
vigaḍhe yudhi sambādhe vetsyase māṃ janārdana | janārdana! yadi kadācit āpa māṃ vā mama parākramaṃ vā na jānīyāḥ, tadā bhayaṅkara-saṃhārakāri ghamāsāna-yuddhe pravṛtte, udayataḥ sūryasya prabhāsadṛśaṃ māṃ niścayaṃ jñāsyasi || paruṣair ākṣipasi kiṃ vraṇaṃ pūtim ivonnayan, pake vraṇaṃ cakrūse chindann iva vā, kathaṃ māṃ kaṭhorair vacobhis tiraskaroṣi? ||
Wika ni Bhīma: “Sa siksikang labanan, sa dikit-dikitang sagupaan, tunay mo akong makikilala, O Janārdana. Kung minsan man ay hindi mo nakilala ako o ang aking lakas, kapag nagsimula ang kakila-kilabot na paglalamas at pagpatay, tiyak na makikilala mo ako—gaya ng liwanag ng sumisikat na araw. Bakit mo ako inuudyukan sa mabibigat na salita, na para bang binubuklat ang isang sugat na nagnanana—gaya ng taong hinihiwa ng kutsilyo ang hinog na pigsa—ginigising ang sakit at poot nang walang dahilan?”
भीमसेन उवाच
The verse contrasts true worth proven by action with needless verbal provocation: Bhīma insists his valor will be evident in the decisive moment of battle, and he criticizes harsh speech that needlessly inflames pain and anger—like reopening a festering wound.
In Udyoga Parva’s pre-war tensions, Bhīma addresses Kṛṣṇa (Janārdana), asserting that once the terrible melee begins Kṛṣṇa will unmistakably witness his prowess, and questioning why Kṛṣṇa’s severe words are provoking him as if aggravating an already painful wound.
