The verse frames ethical tension in royal decision-making: a ruler must seek truthful counsel about an opponent’s message and intentions. Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s inquiry highlights the need for clear information and responsible judgment before war, even while acknowledging Arjuna’s prowess against the wicked.
In the Kaurava assembly, Dhṛtarāṣṭra questions Sañjaya about the message delivered by Arjuna (Dhanañjaya). The scene sets up the diplomatic exchange and the court’s response, with Sañjaya positioned as the reporter of what was said.
