Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 28: Dharmādharmalakṣaṇa in Āpad

Crisis-Discernment of Right and Wrong

यदि तुम शान्ति धारण करना ही ठीक समझते हो तो बताओ, युद्धमें प्रवृत्त होनेसे राजाओंके धर्मका ठीक-ठीक पालन होता है या युद्ध छोड़कर भाग जानेसे? क्षत्रियधर्मका विचार करते हुए तुम जो कुछ भी कहोगे, मैं तुम्हारी वही बात सुननेको उद्यत हूँ ।।

yadi tvaṁ śāntiṁ dhārayitum eva ṭhīkaṁ samajhasi, tato vada—yuddhe pravṛttena rājñāṁ dharmasya samyak-samyag anuṣṭhānaṁ bhavati vā, athavā yuddhaṁ tyaktvā palāyanena? kṣatriya-dharmaṁ vicārayann yat kiṁcid vadiṣyasi, tad eva te vacanaṁ śrotum aham udyataḥ || cāturvarṇyasya prathamaṁ saṁvibhāgam avekṣya tvaṁ sañjaya svaṁ ca karma | niśamyātho pāṇḍavānāṁ ca karma praśaṁsa vā nindā vā yā matis te ||

Wika ni Vāyu: “Kung tunay mong iniisip na ang pagpapanatili ng kapayapaan ang tamang landas, sabihin mo sa akin ito: natutupad ba nang wasto ang dharma ng mga hari sa pagpasok sa digmaan, o sa pagtalikod sa digmaan at pagtakas? Sa pagninilay sa tungkulin ng isang kṣatriya, anuman ang maging pasya mo, handa akong pakinggan ang mismong mga salita mo. “Una, Sañjaya, suriin ang pangunahing paghahati ng apat na varṇa at ang nararapat na gawain para sa bawat isa, at pagnilayan mo rin ang sarili mong tungkulin. Pagkatapos, tingnan mong mabuti ang ginagawa ng mga Pāṇḍava sa kasalukuyan; saka, ayon sa iyong paghatol, purihin mo sila o tuligsain.”

Educational Q&A

The verse frames a dharma-inquiry: peace is not automatically virtuous if it becomes cowardly desertion. Royal/kṣatriya duty must be judged by whether it protects order and justice. Vāyu urges an evaluation grounded in varṇa-duties (sva-karma) and then a fair assessment—praise or blame—of the Pāṇḍavas’ present conduct.

Vāyu addresses Sañjaya and challenges him to decide, from the standpoint of kṣatriya-dharma, whether engaging in war or fleeing from it better fulfills a king’s duty. He then instructs Sañjaya to review the four-varṇa framework and each group’s prescribed work, consider his own role, and finally assess the Pāṇḍavas’ actions, offering either commendation or censure based on reasoned judgment.
