स्थावरं जड़म॑ चैव जगत्‌ सर्व सुरासुरम्‌ । भारते भरतश्रेष्ठ एकस्थमिह दृश्यते

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

sthāvaraṃ jaḍaṃ caiva jagat sarvaṃ surāsuram |

bhārate bharataśreṣṭha ekastham iha dṛśyate, bharataśreṣṭha ||

Wika ni Vaiśampāyana: O pinakamainam sa angkan ng Bharata, dito sa Mahābhārata ay nasisilayan ang buong sansinukob—mga diyos at mga asura—na nagkatipon sa iisang dako: ang di-nakikilos at ang walang-malay, at tunay ngang lahat ng umiiral. Sa pangwakas na pangitain na ito, inilalatag ng epiko ang malawak na tanawin ng dharma, kung saan ang bawat antas ng nilalang ay nakahanay na parang sasaksi sa huling pagtutuos ng dharma at sa kapalaran ng mga Pāṇḍava.
