To preserve perfectly pure brahmacarya, one should exercise extreme vigilance over the mind, since dreams can generate involuntary sensual or morally compromising impressions; therefore Bhishma recommends complete avoidance of sleep as a rigorous preventive discipline.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma addresses the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) and begins a teaching on the mind’s states in dream and deep sleep and the means to attain the guṇātīta Brahman; this verse introduces the ascetic counsel focused on guarding brahmacarya by avoiding sleep due to dream-related faults.
