सभी उपायोंसे लोभ और क्रोधको जीतना चाहिये। यही ज्ञानोंमें पवित्र ज्ञान है और यही आत्मसंयम है ।। वार्यो सर्वात्मना तौ हि श्रेयोघातार्थमुच्छितौ । नित्यं क्रोधाच्छियं रक्षेत् तपो रक्षेच्च मत्सरात्
sarvaiḥ upāyaiḥ lobhaṁ ca krodhaṁ ca jetavyam | etad eva jñāneṣu pavitraṁ jñānam etad evātmasaṁyamaḥ || vāryau sarvātmanā tau hi śreyoghātārtham ucchitau | nityaṁ krodhāc chriyaṁ rakṣet tapo rakṣec ca matsarāt ||
Wika ni Bharadvāja: Dapat daigin ang kasakiman at galit sa lahat ng maaaring paraan. Ito ang pinakadalisay na kaalaman sa lahat ng kaalaman, at ito lamang ang tunay na pagpipigil-sa-sarili. Tunay, ang dalawang ito—kasakiman at galit—ay dapat itakwil nang buong pagkatao, sapagkat winawasak nila ang pinakamataas na kabutihan. Kaya’t laging ingatan ang kasaganaan laban sa galit, at ingatan ang pag-aayuno at pagninilay (tapas) laban sa inggit.
भरद्वाज उवाच
The verse teaches that conquering greed (lobha) and anger (krodha) is the essence of pure knowledge and genuine self-restraint; these inner enemies destroy one’s highest good, so one must guard prosperity from anger and guard austerity from envy.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma and conduct, Bharadvāja delivers a concise ethical maxim, identifying greed and anger as primary obstacles to welfare and spiritual discipline, and prescribing vigilant inner protection against them.
