Śānti-parva 168: Śoka-nivṛtti-buddhi (The Cognition that Reduces Grief) and Piṅgalā’s Nairāśya
मनुष्य कर्मद्वारा अप्राप्य अर्थ नहीं पा सकता। जो होनहार है, वही होता है; इस बातको तुम सब लोग जान लो। मनुष्य त्रिवर्गसे रहित होनेपर भी आवश्यक पदार्थको प्राप्त कर लेता है; अतः मीक्षप्राप्तिका गूढ़ उपाय (ज्ञान) ही जगत्का वास्तविक कल्याण करनेवाला है ।।
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: tatas tad agryaṃ vacanaṃ manonugaṃ samastam ājñāya tato hi hetumat | tadā praṇeduś ca va jahṛṣire ca te kurupravīrāya ca cakrir añjalim ||
Wika ni Vaiśampāyana: Nang lubos na nilang maunawaan ang napakahusay na pahayag na iyon—makatuwiran at kaaya-aya sa isip—silang lahat ay napuspos ng galak. Nagtaas sila ng masayang sigaw, at nang magkakabit ang mga palad sa paggalang, nagbigay-pugay sila kay Yudhiṣṭhira, ang pangunahing bayani ng mga Kuru. (Ipinatibay ng aral na ito na hindi makakamit ng tao ang bunga sa pamamagitan lamang ng gawa; ang itinadhana ang siyang mangyayari. Kahit ang kulang sa tatlong layunin ng buhay ay maaaring magtamo ng mga kailangan; kaya ang lihim at maselang daan tungo sa mokṣa—ang tunay na kaalaman—ang siyang tunay na kapakanan ng daigdig.)
वैशग्पायन उवाच
The passage underscores that outcomes are not obtained by human effort alone; what is destined occurs. Since even those lacking the three worldly aims (dharma, artha, kāma) may still obtain necessities, the deepest welfare of the world lies in the subtle means to liberation—true knowledge (jñāna) leading toward mokṣa.
After Yudhiṣṭhira speaks, the listeners (his brothers/assembly) fully grasp his excellent, well-reasoned words. They rejoice, raise a celebratory cry, and respectfully salute him with joined hands (añjali), acknowledging him as the foremost Kuru hero.
