Draupadī’s Exhortation on Rājadharma and Daṇḍa (द्रौपद्याः राजधर्मोपदेशः)

Educational Q&A

The verse asserts that lack of courage/vigor disqualifies one from effective sovereignty and prosperity: such a person neither truly enjoys rulership nor properly gains and enjoys wealth, and is portrayed as failing to sustain lineage—using the image that fish do not live in mud alone.

Within the Shanti Parva’s rājadharma-oriented instruction, Sahadeva speaks in a didactic tone, emphasizing the social and political expectation that a ruler (or household head) must possess courage and strength to secure land, wealth, and continuity of the family line.
