Kośa, Bala, and Maryādā: Treasury, Capacity, and Enforceable Limits (कोश-बल-मर्यादा)

स्वधर्मानन्तरा वृत्तिर्जात्याननुपजीवत: । जहत: प्रथमं कल्पमनुकल्पेन जीवनम्‌

svadharmānantara vṛttir jātyān anupajīvataḥ | jahataḥ prathamaṃ kalpam anukalpena jīvanam ||

Wika ni Bhīṣma: “Kapag ang tao’y hindi makapanatili ng buhay sa pag-asa sa mga tungkuling itinakda para sa kanyang kapanganakan at kalagayan, itinuturo rin ang isang kapalit na paraan ng kabuhayan. Sapagkat sa panahon ng kagipitan, ang napipilitang talikuran ang unang landas—ang pamumuhay ayon sa sariling dharma—ay pinahihintulutang mabuhay sa ikalawang landas, maging sa pag-angkin ng hanapbuhay ng mas mababang antas, upang mapangalagaan ang buhay nang hindi nahuhulog sa kawalang-batas.”
