मातापितृगुरुपूजा-प्रशंसा

Praise of Venerating Mother, Father, and Teacher

अवध्या हि सदा माता पिता चाप्यपकारिणौ

avadhyā hi sadā mātā pitā cāpyapakāriṇau |

Wika ni Bhishma: “Ang ina ay laging di dapat lapastanganin, at gayundin ang ama—kahit sila’y nakagawa ng nakapipinsala. Kahit magkamali ang ama o ina, hindi sila dapat ituring na karapat-dapat hamakin o saktan; sapagkat ang anak (o alagad), kahit makita ang kanilang pagkukulang, ay hindi dapat madungisan sa paghihiganti. Dahil sa pag-ibig, ang gayong matatanda ay hindi nagbubunton ng sisi sa anak o mag-aaral; bagkus, lagi nilang pinagsisikapang akayin siya pabalik sa landas ng dharma. Ang tunay na kadakilaan ng mga magulang at guro na tulad nito ay ganap na nalalaman lamang ng mga diyos kasama ng mga dakilang rishi.”

Educational Q&A

Parents (and by extension revered elders like teachers) are to be regarded as inviolable; even if they err or cause harm, one should not respond with violence or contempt, but remain oriented to dharma and reform through respect.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhīṣma teaches Yudhiṣṭhira ethical norms of conduct, emphasizing the special, protected status of mother and father and the duty of the younger to respond with restraint and righteousness.
