Restraint of wrath in the royal assembly
मित्रतामनुवृत्तं तु समुपेक्षेतर पण्डित: । प्रदीप्य य: प्रदीप्ताग्निं प्राक् चिरं नाभिधावति । भस्मापि न स विन्देत शिष्टं क्वचन भारत
mitratām anuvṛttaṁ tu samupeksheta ra paṇḍitaḥ | pradīpya yaḥ pradīptāgniṁ prāk ciraṁ nābhidhāvati | bhasmāpi na sa vindeta śiṣṭaṁ kvacana bhārata ||
Dapat talikuran ng taong marunong ang sinumang sa pangalan lamang sumusunod sa pagkakaibigan ngunit sa gawa’y walang malasakit. O Bhārata, kung may magsisindi ng apoy at kapag ito’y naglalagablab na’y hindi nagmamadaling apulahin sa tamang oras, wala siyang masusumpungan kahit ang natirang abo—gayon din, ang kapabayaan sa sandaling kritikal ay sumisira maging sa maaaring mailigtas pa.
दुर्योधन उवाच
Friendship must be proven by timely, effective action; mere profession of loyalty without decisive help at the critical moment is to be rejected, because delay can destroy even the possibility of saving anything.
Duryodhana is speaking in the Sabha Parva context, using a vivid fire-and-ash metaphor to argue that an unreliable ally—one who claims friendship but remains inactive when urgent action is needed—should be abandoned.
