अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः

The Commencement of the Great Departure

उत्सृज्याभरणान्यज्राज्जगृहे वल्कलान्युत । भीमार्जुनयमाश्चैव द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी

utsṛjyābharaṇāny ajrāj jagṛhe valkalāny uta | bhīmārjunayamāś caiva draupadī ca yaśasvinī ||

Wika ni Vaiśampāyana: Matapos itapon ang kanilang mga palamuti, ang hari ay nagsuot ng kasuotang mula sa balat ng puno; gayundin sina Bhīma, Arjuna, Yama (Yudhiṣṭhira), at ang marangal na Draupadī. Ang gawaing ito’y tanda ng sinadyang pagtalikod sa dangal at aliw ng pagkahari, pagyakap sa pagkamapayak habang tinatahak ang huling paglalakbay, ayon sa dharma ng pagbitaw sa dulo ng buhay.
