अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः
रुधिरे पीयमाने च किंस्विद् दुर्योधनो<ब्रवीत् । युद्धस्थलमें अपने भाई दुःशासनको भीमसेनके द्वारा मारा गया देख जब कि उसका रक्त पीया जा रहा था, दुर्योधनने क्या कहा?
rudhire pīyamāne ca kiṃsvid duryodhano 'bravīt |
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Nang makita sa larangan ng digmaan na napatay ang kanyang kapatid na si Duḥśāsana sa kamay ni Bhīmasena, at habang iniinom ang kanyang dugo, ano ang sinabi ni Duryodhana?
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse functions as a narrative hinge: it highlights how war can intensify hatred to the point of dehumanizing acts, prompting the listener to judge the ethical collapse that follows from adharma—especially the long chain of insults and retaliations between the houses.
On the battlefield, Duḥśāsana has been killed by Bhīmasena, and Bhīma is drinking his blood. The narrator (Vaiśampāyana) then asks what Duryodhana said upon witnessing this shocking scene.
