तब शत्रुसूदन राधापुत्र कर्णने तुरंत ही लौटकर सब ओरसे पैने बाणोंकी वर्षा करके भीमसेनको ढक दिया ।। भीमसेनरथव्यग्रं कर्ण भारत सात्यकि: । अभ्यर्दयदमेयात्मा पार्ष्णिग्रहणकारणात्
tataḥ śatrusūdanaḥ rādhāputraḥ karṇaḥ tūrṇam eva nivṛtya sarvataḥ tīkṣṇabāṇavarṣeṇa bhīmasenaṃ ācchādayām āsa || bhīmasenarathavyagraṃ karṇaṃ bhārata sātyakiḥ | abhyardayad ameyātmā pārṣṇigrahaṇakāraṇāt ||
Wika ni Sañjaya: Pagkaraan, si Karna, anak ni Rādhā at tagapagpuksa ng mga kaaway, ay agad na pumihit pabalik at mula sa lahat ng panig ay pinaulanan si Bhīmasena ng matutulis na palaso hanggang matabingan siya sa paningin. Nang makita ni Satyaki—O inapo ni Bharata—na nagkakagulo ang karwahe ni Bhīma dahil kay Karna, mariin niyang pinisil at inatake si Karna, upang ipagtanggol ang hulihang hanay at huwag hayaang masunggaban si Bhīma sa sandaling dehado. Ipinahihiwatig ng talatang ito ang asal ng digmaan: ang tungkulin ng mandirigma ay hindi lamang sariling tapang, kundi ang maagap na pagsaklolo sa kakampi kapag sila’y nalulunod sa bigat ng kalaban.
संजय उवाच
In the midst of violence, the warrior-ethic (kshatriya-dharma) emphasizes timely protection of comrades: courage is shown not only by striking the enemy but by intervening when an ally is overwhelmed, preventing an unfair seizure from the rear and maintaining battlefield propriety.
Karna rapidly turns back and unleashes a dense, sharp arrow-shower that obscures Bhima. Observing Bhima’s chariot in distress due to Karna’s assault, Satyaki attacks Karna fiercely, motivated by the need to secure the rear and prevent Bhima from being caught at a disadvantage.
