Aśvatthāman’s Arrow-Screen and the Confrontation with Yudhiṣṭhira (द्रौणि–युधिष्ठिर-संग्रामः)

यथा चामित्रवत्‌ सर्व त्वमस्मासु प्रवर्तसे । मैं बुद्धिमान दुर्योधनका प्रिय मित्र हूँ। अतः मेरे पास जो कुछ धन-वैभव है, वह और मेरे प्राण भी उसीके लिये हैं। परंतु पापदेशमें उत्पन्न हुए शल्य! यह स्पष्ट जान पड़ता है कि पाण्डवोंने तुम्हें हमारा भेद लेनेके लिये ही यहाँ रख छोड़ा है; क्योंकि तुम हमारे साथ शत्रुके समान ही सारा बर्ताव कर रहे हो

yathā cāmitravat sarvaṁ tvam asmāsu pravartase | mayi buddhimān duryodhanasya priya-mitraṁ asmi | ataḥ me pāśa yo 'sti dhana-vaibhavaṁ tat sarvaṁ prāṇāś ca tasyaiva | kintu pāpa-deśe utpanna śalya, idaṁ spaṣṭaṁ jñāyate yat pāṇḍavaiḥ tvāṁ asmākaṁ bheda-grahaṇāyaiva iha sthāpitaḥ | yasmāt tvaṁ asmābhiḥ saha śatrunā samānaṁ sarva-vyavahāraṁ karoṣi ||

Wika ni Karna: “Sa lahat ng bagay, kumikilos ka sa amin na para bang ikaw ay kaaway. Ako ang minamahal na kaibigan ng marunong na si Duryodhana; kaya ang anumang yaman at karangyaan na nasa akin—pati ang aking buhay—ay para sa kanya. Ngunit ikaw, Shalya, na isinilang sa lupang makasalanan: malinaw na inilagay ka rito ng mga Pandava upang usisain ang aming mga lihim, sapagkat sa lahat ng paraan ay tinatrato mo kami na parang kalaban.”
