किंचिच्छेषे दिनकरे पुत्राणां तव पश्यताम् | इस प्रकार आपके ताऊ भीष्म युद्धस्थलमें अर्जुनके तीखे बाणोंसे अत्यन्त विद्ध हो गये थे--उनका शरीर छिदकर छलनी हो रहा था। वे उसी अवस्थामें
sañjaya uvāca | kiṃciccheṣe dinakare putrāṇāṃ tava paśyatām | hāheti divi devānāṃ pārthivānāṃ ca bhārata, patamāne rathād bhīṣme babhūva sumahāsvanaḥ ||
Sinabi ni Sañjaya: Nang kaunti na lamang ang nalalabi sa araw, sa harap mismo ng mga anak mong lalaki, si Bhīṣma—na paulit-ulit na tinusok ng matutulis na palaso ni Arjuna—ay nahulog mula sa kanyang karwahe, nakaharap ang ulo sa silangan. O Bharata, habang bumabagsak si Bhīṣma mula sa karwahe, sumiklab ang isang malakas na panaghoy—“Ay! Ay!”—sa mga diyos sa langit at sa mga hari sa lupa.
