The verse heightens the moral and emotional gravity of the duel by comparing it to the cosmic struggle of Indra and Vṛtra, implying that certain confrontations in a dharma-war are perceived as world-shaping tests of strength, resolve, and kṣatriya responsibility.
A fierce one-on-one combat breaks out between two principal warriors (referred to as ‘those two’), and both armies’ leading chariot-fighters—Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas—pause to watch the intensity of the fight.
