स्थावर (वृक्ष-पर्वत आदि) जीव

vāyudeva uvāca | sthāvarāḥ (vṛkṣa-parvata-ādayaḥ) jīvāḥ, paśavaḥ, vāhanāni, rākṣasāḥ, sarpāḥ, kīṭa-pataṅgāḥ, pakṣiṇaḥ, aṇḍajāḥ prāṇinaḥ, catuṣpadāḥ, unmattāḥ, badhirāḥ, mūkāḥ tathā anye yāvantaḥ pāpamaya-rogavantaḥ (kuṣṭhina-ādayaḥ) manuṣyāḥ santi, te sarve tamoguṇe nimagnāḥ | svakarmaṇā yathā-lakṣaṇā ime durācāriṇaḥ jīvāḥ sadā duḥkhe nimagnā bhavanti | teṣāṃ cittavṛttīnāṃ pravāho nimna-daśāyāṃ gacchati, tasmāt te arvāk-srotasa iti ucyante | te tamoguṇe nimagnāḥ sarve prāṇinaḥ tāmasāḥ || 23–25 || teṣām utkarṣam udrekaṃ vakṣyāmy aham ataḥ param | yathā te sukṛtāl lokāl labhante puṇyakarmiṇaḥ ||

Wika ni Vāyu: “Lahat ng nilalang—gaya ng mga hindi gumagalaw (mga punò, bundok at katulad), mga hayop, mga hayop na pangkarga, mga rākṣasa, mga ahas, mga insekto at uod, mga ibon, mga nilikhang mula sa itlog, mga hayop na may apat na paa, at maging mga taong baliw, bingi, pipi, o dinadapuan ng mga sakit na bunga ng kasalanan (gaya ng ketong)—ay pawang nakalubog sa gunang dilim (tamas). Taglay ang mga palatandaang nilikha ng sarili nilang mga gawa, ang mga nilalang na masama ang asal na ito’y laging nakababad sa pagdurusa. Sapagkat ang agos ng kanilang mga hilig ng isip ay dumadaloy pababa tungo sa mas mababang kalagayan, sila’y tinatawag na ‘yaong ang daloy ay pababa’ (arvāk-srotas). Kaya’t ang lahat ng nilalang na lubog sa tamas ay tinatawag na tāmasa. Pagkaraan nito, ipaliliwanag ko kung paanong yaong mga nahulog sa gayong mga sinapupunang tamasiko ay makaaangat at uunlad, at kung paanong, sa pagiging tagagawa ng kabutihan, mararating nila ang mas matataas na daigdig.”
