Kuntī–Vyāsa Dialogue on Durvāsā’s Boon and Karṇa’s Birth
गान्धार्याश्वैव तेजस्वी पृथायाश्व॒ पृथक् पृथक् । संकीर्त्य नामनी राजा ददौ दानमनुत्तमम्
gāndhāryāś caiva tejasvī pṛthāyāś ca pṛthak pṛthak | saṅkīrtya nāmanī rājā dadau dānam anuttamam ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Ang maningning na hari, matapos banggitin nang magkahiwalay ang mga pangalan nina Gāndhārī at Pṛthā (Kuntī), ay nagkaloob sa bawat isa ng handog na walang kapantay—hayagang pinarangalan sila at nagbigay ng dakilang kawanggawa sa diwa ng paggalang at wastong tungkulin.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dāna as a royal and ethical duty: giving should be deliberate, respectful, and personal—honoring recipients by name and treating each with due regard. Such giving functions as dharmic restitution and social healing after suffering.
In the Āśramavāsika context, the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) makes formal, separate offerings for Gāndhārī and Kuntī, publicly naming them and granting excellent gifts, signaling reverence toward elders and a commitment to righteous conduct in the aftermath of the war.
