पौराणां च महाराज श्रुत्वा राज्ञस्तदा गतिम्‌ । महाराज! उनके अन्तःपुरमें उस समय महान्‌ आर्तनाद होने लगा। राजाकी वैसी गति सुनकर पुरवासियोंमें भी हाहाकार मच गया

paurāṇāṃ ca mahārāja śrutvā rājñas tadā gatim |

Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: “O dakilang hari, nang marinig ng mga taga-lungsod ang sinapit ng hari noon, umalingawngaw ang isang malaking panaghoy—una sa loob ng mga silid-panloob ng palasyo, at pagkaraan ay kumalat din sa mga mamamayan ang sigaw ng pagdadalamhati.”
