Honoring Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Regulating Śrāddha-Gifts

Educational Q&A

Loyalty is defined by disciplined obedience to rightful authority and reverence for those who are to be honored; deliberate contrariness is treated as enmity and invites daṇḍa (punitive correction).

Vaiśampāyana reports Yudhiṣṭhira’s policy statement to his brothers and ministers: Dhṛtarāṣṭra is to be regarded as venerable, and those who follow his commands are counted as Yudhiṣṭhira’s well-wishers, while those who oppose are treated as enemies liable to punishment.
